The results of a coal analysis may be reported on any of several bases, differing from each other in the manner by which moisture and ash are treated. Except for data reported on a dry basis, it is essential that an appropriate moisture content be given in the data report.
This test method covers the determination of moisture in the analysis sample of coal or coke. It is used for calculating other analytical results to a dry basis. When used in conjunction with the air drying loss as determined in accordance with Method D2013 or Practice D346, each analytical result can be calculated to an asreceived basis:
Air Dried (AD): includes Inherent moisture (Im) only: ... excludes all Moisture Ash . The Proximate Analysis of any coal ie the % contents of Moisture, Ash (A), Volatile Matter (VM), Fixed Carbon (FC) – also Sulphur (S) and Calorific Value (CV) – can be expressed on any of the above bases. Conversions . To obtain: Air Dry: Dry Basis ...
coal and surface moisture present in the sample. (ii) Equilibrated Basis – The sample is brought to standardized moisture and humidity levels and GCV of the resultant sample is reported. (iii) Air Dried Basis The given coal sample is air dried, as per procedure given by the Bureau of Indian Standards and the GCV is measured thereafter.
This is the moisture value used for calculating other analytical results to a dry basis. It can be used in conjunction with airdried moisture to calculate on an asreceived basis. Coal samples contain several different types of moisture, which are measured and recorded in different ways.

Ash content may be determined as air dried basis and on oven dried basis. The main difference between the two is that the latter is determined after expelling the moisture content in the sample of coal Fixed carbon. The fixed carbon content of the coal is the carbon found in the material which is left after volatile materials are driven off.

Appendix B. Other bases used include ashfree moist, dry mineral matter free and dry minerals and inorganics free. These are not described here. In terms of coal quality parameters that are relevant to reporting of Coal Resources, most that are moisture dependent are reported at air dry basis (the value of which should be stated).

Dec 12, 2011· DMMF (dry, mineralmatterfree) basis leaves out the presence of moisture and mineral matters in coal, for example: quartz, pyrite, calcite, etc. Mineral matter is not directly measured but may be obtained by one of a number of empirical formula based on the ultimate and proximate analysis.
Moisture content is determined by heating an airdried coal sample at 105–110 °C (221–230 °F) under specified conditions until a constant weight is obtained. In general, the moisture content increases with decreasing rank and ranges from 1 to 40 percent for the various ranks of coal. The ...
